When you move to Dubai as a first-time visitor from India — or even after moving there as an NRI — one of the first practical questions you ask is: can I just open Google Pay or PhonePe and tap to pay at a mall, restaurant, or taxi? Here is the complete and honest answer.

Does Dubai Accept UPI?
UPI has completely transformed the way people in India think about money. It is instant, free, and so seamlessly embedded into daily life in India that using anything else feels like a step backwards. So the question of whether it works in Dubai is one of the most practical things any Indian traveller or NRI needs to know.
The UAE and India signed an official MOU linking their payment systems in 2023. UPI is formally enabled and Indian visitors can technically use BHIM, Google Pay, and PhonePe at specific registered merchants in the UAE.
In practice, UPI acceptance is very limited. It works at some tourist-friendly spots, Indian restaurants, gold souks, and shops catering to Indian customers — but not at supermarkets, petrol stations, hospitals, or mainstream retail chains.
As of March 2026, UPI in Dubai is a supplement — not a primary payment method. Do not arrive in Dubai expecting UPI to work everywhere the way it does in India. The infrastructure is there and it is expanding, but it is not yet reliable enough to depend on for everyday spending.
Point 02 · Dubai’s Payment Ecosystem
What Payment Systems Does Dubai Actually Use?
Dubai is primarily a card-based economy. The vast majority of transactions — from groceries and luxury retail to restaurant bills — are completed using debit or credit cards. Understanding how this ecosystem works will save you significant inconvenience when you arrive.
-
1Visa and Mastercard — universally accepted Virtually every retailer in Dubai accepts both Visa and Mastercard. Contactless tap-to-pay transactions are the norm and most payment terminals support tap-to-pay without a PIN for smaller amounts. If you have an international Visa or Mastercard, you can pay almost anywhere in Dubai without any additional setup.
-
2Apple Pay and Google Pay — widely supported Mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported through the existing contactless card infrastructure. Nearly all major UAE banks allow consumers to link their cards to these wallets, enabling seamless contactless mobile payments at almost all merchant locations. If you have an active UAE bank account — even a digital-only bank account — you will have immediate contactless mobile wallet functionality.
-
3Cash — still accepted but not preferred Cash is still accepted at smaller convenience stores, street vendors, and traditional market areas. However, Dubai is likely one of the least cash-dependent cities in the world. Many merchants actually prefer card payments over cash. Carry a small amount of UAE Dirhams for emergencies — but do not rely on cash as your primary payment method.
Point 03 · The UAE’s Own UPI Equivalent
The UAE Has Its Own Instant Payment System — Meet IPI
Most Indian visitors do not know that the UAE has its own domestic instant payment network — called the Immediate Payment Instruction system, or IPI. Understanding this system is essential for NRIs who will be living and working in the UAE rather than just visiting.
IPI allows real-time bank-to-bank fund transfers between UAE bank accounts — in exactly the same way UPI allows instant transfers between Indian bank accounts. It is quick, fee-free, and widely used by both individuals and businesses to pay each other within the UAE banking system. Once you have a UAE bank account, IPI becomes your primary tool for sending and receiving money locally.
| Feature | India’s UPI | UAE’s IPI |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer speed | Instant | Instant |
| Cost | Free | Free |
| Works between | All Indian bank accounts | All UAE bank accounts |
| Merchant payments | Very widely accepted across India | Growing but less ubiquitous than cards |
| Cross-border use | Expanding — UAE linkage active | Expanding — India linkage active |
| Requires | Indian bank account + UPI app | UAE bank account |
Point 04 · Practical Advice
What Should Indian Visitors and NRIs Actually Do?
Now that you know how Dubai’s payment ecosystem actually works, here is exactly what to do depending on whether you are visiting short-term or relocating as an NRI.
-
Carry an international debit or credit card as your primary payment method. Cards issued by HDFC, ICICI, SBI, and Axis Bank with international usage enabled all work in Dubai without any additional configuration. Prefer a card with low or zero foreign transaction fees to avoid unnecessary charges on every purchase.
-
If you are an NRI or staying longer — open a UAE bank account. Even a digital bank account through Wio or Liv gives you immediate access to the full UAE payment ecosystem — including IPI transfers, local bill payments, and a UAE debit card for everyday spending. This is by far the most practical solution for anyone spending significant time in Dubai.
-
Keep a small amount of UAE Dirhams in cash for emergencies. Exchange currency inside the city — not at Dubai Airport, where exchange rates are notably poor. A money exchange centre in any shopping mall or the city centre will give you a significantly better rate. Withdrawing from an ATM using your Indian card is also a good option for competitive rates.
-
Check UPI merchant availability before relying on it. If you want to use UPI for specific purchases — particularly in Indian restaurants, the gold souk, or Indian grocery stores — confirm with your Indian bank which UAE merchants are currently registered. The list is expanding but still limited as of March 2026.
Dubai is a card-first city. Bring an international card, keep a small amount of cash, and open a UAE bank account if you are staying longer than a few weeks. UPI works at some locations and is growing — but it is not yet something you can depend on the way you do back home in India.
The UPI–UAE payment linkage is actively expanding through 2026. The experience for Indian visitors is going to keep improving — but right now, cards are king in Dubai.
