Jebel Ali Industrial Area: Dubai’s Powerhouse of Trade and Industry

Jebel Ali is a key port city found inside Dubai (an emirate). It is situated around 30 miles or roughly 35 kilometres south-west of central Dubai, and rests along the southern side of the Persian Gulf.

The past couple of decades have seen Jebel Ali transform from a relatively quiet strip of coastline into one of the top industrial zones across the whole of the Middle East.

Visionary Beginnings in the 1970s

The origins of Jebel Ali can trace back to an ambitious plan made by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

During the early 1970s, he envisioned developing Jebel Ali into an industrial zone, which would contain a town, airport and port.

At the time this was truly visionary thinking, as many nations in the region were relying almost entirely upon their oil reserves. He wanted to create an economy that could stand firm well beyond his lifetime.

Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum ordered the construction of Jebel Ali to commence in 1978, and formally opened it in 1979. On the occasion of the grand opening of Jebel Ali, Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit to officially open the port.

Located right at the heart of the Jebel Ali Industrial Area is the Port of Jebel Ali. It currently represents one of the largest ports and logistical centres in the United Arab Emirates. More importantly, it holds the title of the world’s largest man-made harbour, and it is one of the busier ports in the Middle East. Due to both the extreme depth of the harbour and the extremely large scale of its port facilities, it can accommodate many of the very largest vessels in existence. So large and deep are its harbour and port facilities that a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and numerous accompanying strike group ships may dock side-by-side at the same time. US Naval vessels regularly use the Port of Jebel Ali as a port call, thereby making it a strategically important port of international significance.

Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA): An Economic Trade Centre

Another milestone in the history of Jebel Ali came about with the establishment of the Jebel Ali Free Zone, commonly referred to as JAFZA. Following the opening of Jebel Ali Port in 1979, a free economic trade zone was created through a decree issued by the Ruler of Dubai. JAFZA began operating in 1985 using 19 offices and warehouse units available for rent. Since those humble beginnings, JAFZA has grown into an international powerhouse. The Jebel Ali Free Zone is a community and ecosystem where industries such as logistics, e-commerce, and petrochemicals flourish, resulting in a total annual trade volume exceeding $169 billion in 2023.

Amongst the largest free trade zones globally, JAFZA contains tens of thousands of multinational corporations, manufacturers, traders and exporters — and generates nearly 25% (approximately 24%) of the total foreign direct investment (FDI) flowing into Dubai. To put it simply, JAFZA is one of the most critical drivers of growth throughout the entire region.

Industries Found in Jebel Ali

Given its diversity and magnitude, there are multiple types of industries represented at the Jebel Ali Industrial Area. These include aluminium smelting, automobile manufacturing, cement production, logistics, electronics and electrical goods, automotive, food and agriculture, e-commerce, and petrochemicals.

Additionally, there are various massive infrastructure installations present within the area. These include the Jebel Ali Power and Desalination Plant — one of the world’s largest combined power and water generation plants — Emirates Global Aluminium, one of the world’s leading producers of aluminium, as well as oil storage facilities, bunkering terminals, and warehouse and logistics centres.

Indian Companies Have Also Been Establishing a Presence

In addition to being an attractive location for businesses due to excellent transportation links to other parts of Dubai and surrounding regions and countries, Jebel Ali has also become home to an increasing number of Indian-based businesses. By mid-year 2023, over 1,500 Indian companies had set up shop within JAFZA. Additionally, the India-based Bharat Mart development will span an enormous footprint of approximately 2.7 million square feet, and will serve as a major distribution centre for Indian manufactured products.

Alongside the continued development of Jebel Ali itself, additional developments are being built in the surrounding areas such as Expo City Dubai, the legacy site of Expo 2020, and Dubai Investment Park — a mixed-use project incorporating industrial, commercial, and residential areas.
